So, what if you after the upgrade still have a lot of attachments in ~/Library/Mail Downloads ? (Those will not be found in the new folder .. and I copied mine over there.) Still the question I guess many have and which has also stopped me from deleting attachments earlier is that they have not always been possible to find again in e-mails after having been deleted from the Mail folder and now it is hard to figure out which ones that could safely be deleted and recovered later on - esp. with old ones that may have hanged around since Eudora days - rebuilding mailboxes might help, but does it? One would realy like a way to find out which e-mails an attachment is bound to if any .. . Any ideas there?

Having just migrated several GB of mail from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, what I can tell is that my 685 MB of attachments are still in ~/Library/Mail Attachments. A dozen of years' mail..
The single attachment I find in ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail Downloads is the only attachment I've received in my new iCloud mail account
I didn't use the migration assistant though. My suggestion is to better double-check before removing the old ~/Library/Mail Attachments..

In some cases, it appears that the copy that ML does is actually a move, as my original directory is empty, and my old attachments are in the new location.

Apparently, when I upgraded to Mountain Lion, the Mail download files were moved to the new location, not copied.
The ~/Library/Mail Downloads folder is left empty, apart from the two files .DS_Store and .localized.

I just checked the size of both folders and they do not match. The original prior to Mountain Lion size is 168 MB, the Mountain Lion one is only 14.3 MB. Perhaps I deleted some mail attachments from Mail at some time in the past but the data was kept.. I don't have time to compare the contents and see if that is so, but before deleting anything I would advise to check the content.

It's possible that it only moved/copied those files that are still attached to messages in your mailboxes. The previous folder would keep attachments if you viewed them in Mail, even after you deleted the messages.

Now, that would make sense.. It makes one more folder (with the 'Unsupported applications' folder at root) to clean-up on ML..

I also think this is a move command, as *all* of my files were moved from 'Mail Documents' to the Container (upgrading from SL to ML, 7.5 Gigs of attachments). But *none* of my Folders in 'Mail Documents' was moved (another 1 Gig).

Did anyone notice that ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail is an alias to ˜/Library/Mail?
So what will Apple do next time?
