After two years as a football-only member of the Mid-American Conference, the University of Massachusetts will leave the league in 2015, MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher told USA TODAY Sports.

In February, MAC league presidents enacted a clause that started a clock on UMass' membership. According to the clause, UMass could either accept full membership in the MAC or serve only two additional years as a football-only member.

Rather than join the league across all NCAA sports – including basketball, the school's premier athletic program – UMass opted for another two years as a football member before leaving the conference altogether.

'I think we had reached the point with our membership that we felt it was time to call the question: go all-in or we'll move on and do different things,' Steinbrecher said. 'We felt very secure in our membership and confident in the stability of our membership and we're ready to move on.

'This is not the conclusion we anticipated when they joined us three-plus years ago but circumstances have clearly changed and this an end result of those circumstances.'

The clause dates back to the school's original move to the MAC in April 2011. At the time, the move gave the MAC two football-only members, Temple and UMass. Once Temple left to join the Big East – now the American Athletic Conference – the MAC then had the option of converting its relationship with UMass into an all-sports agreement or beginning the two-year membership clock.

'We've really enjoyed our association with the University of Massachusetts,' Steinbrecher said. 'They in so many ways are exactly the type of school we'd like to be affiliated with this conference. So when these two years conclude I'll miss that relationship. On the flip side, while it's not what we hoped or wanted, it was clearly a development that we knew could occur. So we drafted the membership agreement with that in mind.'

The majority of the university's athletic programs compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference, minus football, hockey (Hockey East Conference) and lacrosse (Colonial Athletic Association).

The school's decision leaves UMass with two options for its football program, which has struggled mightily in the recent transition from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The first would be to play on an independent basis, like FBS programs Notre Dame, Navy, Army and Brigham Young.

The second would be to attempt to join another FBS conference, though the Minutemen's inauspicious FBS debut – and lack of similar conferences in the Atlantic Coast region looking for additional members – could make it difficult for UMass to locate another league as a football-only member.

In a statement, UMass athletic director John McCutcheon said the school has been conducting a study of its conference alignment with Carr Sports Consulting, a Florida-based firm that has been used by other FBS programs to conduct coaching and athletic-department searches.

'While the report is not complete,' McCutcheon said, 'we believe full membership for all sports in the MAC is not a good fit for us. Because most of the MAC schools are in the Midwest, the additional travel would strain our athletic budget and pose considerable time management challenges for our student athletes. We are confident that, within the next two years, we will find a more suitable conference for our FBS football program.'

UMass has been among the nation's worst programs since joining the MAC's seven-team East Division. The Minutemen went 1-11 in each of the last two years, winning only two games in conference play, and in both seasons finished sixth in the East.

Each of the Minutemen's two victories have come against teams that went winless in MAC play: Akron in 2012 and Miami (Ohio) in 2013. In 2013, only two of UMass' 11 losses came by less than 10 points; seven came by 21 or more points.

After last season, the university fired second-year coach Charley Molnar, a former Notre Dame assistant, and hired former Miami (Fla.) assistant Mark Whipple, who coached the Minutemen from 1998-2003, going 49-26 overall and three times reaching the FCS playoffs.
